Abstract

The idea of a structural social causality on intentional homicides leads us to the notion that violence can respond to persistent mechanisms, which act in the long term, and whose effects may take time to appear, often being mediated or conditioning of short-term causalities. In this article, we develop this idea through a multivariate analysis of intentional homicide rates in the main Brazilian metropolises with data from 1992 to 2018, distinguishing short-term variables, linked to differential opportunities, and long-term, linked to the formation of dispositions, communities and institutions. The results allow us to glimpse the temporal complexity of the social causality of violent crime.
