Abstract

This paper addresses the historical developments in sociological research dedicated to the study of sleep. The emergence of the field of the Sociology of Sleep can be understood as an effort to investigate the various social phenomena that are affected by—and affect—the practice of falling asleep in everyday life. Sleep and wakefulness, therefore, are perceived as fundamentally social experiences, constituted by moral, affective, and economic notions. However, despite the field’s progress, I argue that there remains a debate regarding the limits of how sociology can study and understand sleep. After conducting a narrative literature review, it was possible to identify productive avenues for contemporary Sociology of Sleep based on studies of decoloniality, actor-network theory, and psychological sociology. I conclude in this paper that the Sociology of Sleep must embrace interdisciplinarity, pushing the boundaries of what can constitute a sociological object.
