Abstract

Epistemic dependence, in the works of Alberto Guerreiro Ramos and Roland Corbisier, is embedded in historical conditions of subordination that constrain the political autonomy of peripheral societies. Tutelage and containment constitute analytical categories, whereas sociological alienation and cultural alienation belong to the authors’ conceptual frameworks. Alberto Guerreiro Ramos examines the passive reception of theories, consular sociology, and sociological reduction; Roland Corbisier investigates the colonial complex, historical consciousness, and the hierarchy of time, which assigns the present and the future to hegemonic powers while relegating the peripheries to a past to be overcome through imitation. Dependence concentrates in hegemonic centers the power to define criteria of validity, internalizes this hierarchy within the peripheries, and preemptively restricts the forms of knowledge, alternatives, and futures recognized as legitimate.
