Abstract

This article discusses the reception of Michel Foucault’s work in Sociology and social theory. The discussion is initiated with the metaphor of the toolbox employed by Foucault himself. The aim is to characterize how the investigations of the French philosopher were received and criticized in this field of knowledge. The usual division of the author’s intellectual journey in three areas – archeology, genealogy and ethics – is criticized considering the written books as well as the disperse texts and courses of his authorship. Finally, this article presents aspects of his influence in Brazil, especially regarding the characteristics of the socalled disciplinary society.
