Un-doing Race: self-defined race in Rachel Dolezal
Keywords:
Race, Gender, Identity, Performativity, Cultural appropriation,Abstract
Taking as a starting point the newsworthy case of Rachel Dolezal, activist for racial rights accused of having “passed” for black, this paper intends to discuss the issue of self-definition in particular as it relates to racial identity. We will touch upon concepts such as cultural appropriation, race and identity in order to reflect upon how race is a cultural fact that is still attached to a biological stigma and whether it is innate or constructed, fixed or changeable. Given the similarities of the discussions I will offer points of comparison between the case of Dolezal and that of the transsexual Sandy Stone to further the discussion about the right to self-definition.
