Abstract

This article analyzes the rise and fall of the town of Entre-Rios, built on the Santa Catarina plain in 1897 and called by the local press “Canudinho de Lages”. In this episode, traces of the cult of the monk João Maria inside the peasant population and also the presence of federalist leaders among the town citizens are investigated, which sheds light on the role of these politicians in the Contestado War (1912-1916). The rapid repression of the movement reveals its emergence into a larger political territory including Southern Brazil and the Río de la Plata countries where networks, alliances and connections often transcended national boundaries.
