Keywords:

This paper aims to promote a reflection on the delineation of differences, hierarchies, and power asymmetries associated with orientalist, ethnicracial, and salvationist speeches in the back-cover text of four books published in the Portuguese publishing market after 9/11: Aurora no deserto (2003), Eu, Safiya (2005), Livre! (2006), and Mutilada (2006), which are centered on the life narratives of black Arab and/or Muslim women presented as the book’s authors. In order to do so, it presents a brief study of the contents of the summaries as they relate to the protagonists, discusses how such representations are constructed and attempts to understand the position occupied by black Arab and/or Muslim women in these power narratives.
