Abstract

The question that shapes this text is related to some dimensions in the transformation of the experience and ways of figuring work that we could attest from the research made in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo between 2002 and 2005. The procedures of research included a questionnaire with the aim of tracing an outline of the inhabitants complexes built by way of self-regulated work parties and a set of interviews made with the population, technicians and local leaderships. The dimensions related to work and forms of occupation appeared because of the necessity of understanding the reality of “low rate populations”, its inhabiting conditions and insertion in the work market, which would be possible only if the new faces of work were known. We consider that the bonds between inhabiting conditions and insertion in the work market cannot be understood the way the classical literature did concerning the so called urban question.
