Abstract

The short story Lambões de caçarola (Trabalhadores do Brasil!), written by João Antônio (1937-1996), is a memorialistic narrative that seeks to recover and emulate the popular experience during Vargas’ government period, proposing a spectral image of the political myth that haunts the history of Brazil, which is recovered in times of crisis and reflection on the potentialities and obstacles to the national project. This article proposes, therefore, to situate this short story by João Antônio in the moment of its publication in the 1970s, and to analyze the means in which it constructs a kind of evaluation about the figure of Vargas and his meaning to the Brazilian history.
