Abstract

In their appraisal of the genre, critics often point out prosaic, everyday life as one of the main characteristics of Brazilian chronicles. I examine thus two texts by chronicle writer Rubem Braga, in which address books are grounds for the use of prosaic themes transformed into poetic ones. My reading is developed through a comparative analysis of these texts with the writings by other chronicle writer and with other genres and it is based on theories about the chronicle and on discussions about literariness.
