Abstract

This study starts from the analysis of two literary works published by Livraria Leite Ribeiro in the 1920s: A isca, by Júlia Lopes de Almeida, and Mãe, by Chrysanthème, a pseudonym used by Cecília Bandeira de Melo Rebelo de Vasconcelos. As the objective, it is intended to present part of the writing of female authorship published by Livraria Leite Ribeiro at the beginning of the 20th century. Hallewell (2017), Velloso (2010) and Castro (2019) were used, in addition to the collection provided by the Hemeroteca Digital of the National Library of Brazil. In conclusion, it was possible to verify that both authors discuss, in these works, themes related to the daily life of women at that time, but they are in different positions. Júlia promotes a reflection on issues related to the life of modern women and their role in the family scenario, while Chrysanthème seems to reveal in a more ostensible way not only cultural but also political and social problems that interfere with women’s freedom of choice. In this way, the fact that Livraria Leite Ribeiro was not based just on the production of books by women, since most of the books published by the publisher are by men, does not exclude the possibility that there is an editorial line inherent in the works of female authorship published by the publisher during the investigated period.
