Abstract

The article analyzes Antonio Candido’s critical work, observing its importance for the emergence and consolidation of Comparative Literature in Brazil. It is intended to focus on the relationship between his theoretical formulations and the social and historical contexts in which they were developed, giving more attention to the singularity of his propositions facing the theoretical impasses of the twentieth century. The aim is to analyze, specifi cally, the formulation and the application of a comparative method in some essays of his 1959 work “Formação da Literatura Brasileira” (Formation of Brazilian Literature), and also to evaluate the changes in some analysis parameters in the author’s later studies.
