Abstract

Samuel Rawet’s short stories, first published in 1956, may be regarded as an initial mark in the surpassing of regionalism in Brazilian literature. Set in an urban ambience, they put in scene people who were “defeated” by the process of modernization in 1950’s Brazil. The article discusses the innovations that Rawet brought and how it reverberates in the work of Luiz Ruffato, 50 years after.
