Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze the importance of the writing process to the composition of the memories of the protagonist-narrator, Zeno Cosini, in the 1923 Italian novel Zeno’s conscience by Italo Svevo. The theoretical sources supported by the ideas of Matteo Palumbo, Teresa de Lauretis and Giacomo Debenedetti will be applied to show how the act of writing in this novel is an essential feature for the construction and understanding of the protagonist-narrator, who needs the writing to legitimize his existence.
