Abstract

Notions and concepts such as cultural backwardness, hegemony, “original trunk”, matrix, “secondary branches”, subalternity, among others, permeate the discussions about culture and identity and establish asymmetrical power relationships. Literature, a constituent part of the cultural and identitary processes of a nation, assimilate such relationships and exemplifies, very often, such concepts. Starting from the text “Meu tio o Iauaretê”, by João Guimarães Rosa, one analyzes the identitary transformation of the character and some of the cultural implications of the narrative.
