Abstract

In the 1936 novel Angústia, by Graciliano Ramos, História do Imperador Carlos Magno e dos doze pares de França appears as the protagonist’s father’s reading. In this article I analyze how História do Imperador Carlos Magno e dos doze pares de França functions as an indication of the linguistic legacy that Luís da Silva, the protagonist in Ramos’s novel, must face. Such legacy entails a transition from a world determined by action to a lettered universe.
