The badly arranged world of João Valério

Caetés is the first book by Graciliano Ramos ant its protagonist is João Valério, a single bookkeeper who is in love with Luisa, the wife of his boss Adrião. By following his trajectory, it is possible to understand that his failures are not due only to his way of dealing with the facts, but especially due to a small-town lifestyle assimilated by him. I propose to interpret the character as a metonymy of something broader than just the expression of his subjectivity, aiming to understand some contradictions of a typical town in the interior of Brazil, internalized by the protagonist.Downloads
