The deaths of Thebans in Seneca’s Oedipus: an analysis of the expressiveness

Abstract

This paper presents a semiotic study on the expressiveness of an 18-verse extract of Seneca’s Oedipus tragedy - the excerpt is part of the first speech of the protagonist (verses 52-70) - followed by a poetic translation. We study how expressiveness and text content are connected to the composition of meaning effects present in the excerpt. Therefore, we 1) make an analysis of the expressiveness, showing the poetic procedures used by the author (figures of speech, meter, rhythm, word games); 2) check the translation possibilities of these effects, seeking to provide a translational response to the Latin text.
