Abstract

In her tribute to Helder Macedo, the author first addresses some relevant aspects of the writer’s academic trajectory, highlighting his importance for the area of Literary Studies. Then, it focuses on the analysis of the contribution of the honoree as a reader and critic of the poet Cesário Verde, by addressing his political-ideological stance, the method of creation and composition, and the antinomy present in the Cesarean work between the city and the countryside. It concludes by showing that the critical analysis undertaken by Helder Macedo is relevant to understand the sensitivity of Cesário Verde, who manifests a singular moral revolt against social injustices and an unequivocal condemnation of them.
