Abstract

This essay discusses some historical and social aspects in which the realism, transplanted from Europe, emerged in Brazil, passing from a structure of sentiment to that of a dominant idea, adapting itself to the local conditions in order to perform specific functions dictated by the new context. Such functions are essentially connected with the construction of a specific idea of nation, which included the control of the social representations through literature.
