Abstract

In this article, we propose a translation of the poem “To New York” from the 1956 collection Éthiopiques by the Senegalese poet Léopold Sédar Senghor. Before the complexity and the lexical and contextual richness of the poet, we will share the difficulties found during the translation. Despite the fact that “to translate is to betray”, as the Italian saying goes, we have tried to respect the Senghorean style as much as possible by considering its ethos and the rhythm of the poem.
