The 1950s was a period of great conflicts in the Colombian countryside, called “La Violência”, a period in which nearly two million people were displaced to large cities and more than 300,000 deaths. The city of Medellín, located in the Department of Antioquia, Colombia, is the object of the reflections of this study, with the general objective of analyzing the impact of the Colombian rural exodus, the urbanization process of the city and the emergence of popular neighborhoods. The method for preparing the research will be exploratory theoretical research. The results found in this study suggest that the lack of public policies aimed at containing the rural exodus in Colombia was not successful, as a predominantly agricultural country becomes predominantly urban, without having the adequate infrastructure to house the number of immigrants who came. from the countryside in search of a new life in the city. The process of expectations to improve the living conditions of peasants who fled armed conflicts and found tranquility were overcome by a total disorder in the swelling and problems of the city, in addition to the lack of housing, poverty and crime.
