This paper aims to present Human Rights Education (HRE) as interdisciplinary content, exploring the main challenges that hinder its incorporation into higher education. Methodologically, the research has an exploratory approach and was developed through bibliographical reviews and analysis of some legislation on this educational practice. In this way, we can see that the theme of human rights is often restricted to law courses, a factor that is associated with the disciplinary training of the teaching staff, constituting one of the obstacles that make it difficult to frame this theme in the interdisciplinary field, as it should be. Another obstacle identified is based on the fragility of the integration between teaching, research and extension, the latter being the sphere where Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), especially public universities, can contribute most effectively in the field of human rights.
