Abstract

This article seeks to investigate the concept of charisma and the role it plays in the modern State in the work of Max Weber. It begins by observing its historical context, a “late” Germany both in relation to its formation as a nation-state and in relation to the development of capitalist economic forces, in a transition marked by an authoritarian-conservative character, called the Prussian way. It revisits central themes, such as rationalization, bureaucratization and industrialization, which according to the author “characterize our time and the foreseeable future” and particularly impact the formation of the modern State. Thus, it exposes Weber's main lines of reasoning about modern democracy, parliaments, the formation of leaders and universal suffrage. Finally, it presents the concept of plebiscitary democracy, considered by Weber as an alternative to the limits imposed by the progressive bureaucratization of the modern State.
