Abstract

The paper discusses change in Brazilian social structure from the 1930s and focuses the analysis of Brazil’s citizenship construction through the process of masses incorporation to government’s structure. Authors such as Luiz Werneck Vianna, Francisco Corrêa Weffort and Wanderley Guilherme dos Santos show that popular participation and syndicalism appear as an important government legitimacy instrument to consolidation of rights in the form of laws. Understanding this dynamic as vital to the definition of citizenship in Brazil, I use the example of the category of domestic workers. Through the concepts of “regulated citizenship” by Wanderley Guilherme dos Santos and “citizenship variable geometry” of Bruno Lautier, I propose a reflection about this profession, addressing the prospect of citizenship construction that originates from professional occupation.
