Abstract

This article discusses the issues, "professionalism" and " profession" and discusses the process of professionalization that occurred in Brazil from the early twentieth century. The discussion of terms such as "trade associations", "ethics code", "credential, "among others, are of utmost importance for the development of this analysis. Thus, from the texts of Dubar (2005), Diniz (2001), Barbosa (1998) and Freidson (1996), is present in this article the discussion of certain currents of thought in the sociology of professions, such as "theories functionalist, "the" historical and comparative theories, "the chain of" symbolic interactionism "and the new currents of thought that emerged from the 70s of last century. This discussion is conducted in two parts. At first, we discussed the idea of "profession" and the process of professionalization of modern western societies, with theoretical arguments, confronting theories in the sociology of the professions and by establishing dialogues between them. In the second part, we work specifically with the professionalization process in Brazil, thus highlighting, among other things, the requirement for technical and scientific knowledge, the growing number of occupations, the increasing expansion of universities and teaching professionals who issue certificates and diplomas and growth of higher education students.
