Abstract

This paper analyzes partial results of a research about the action of the Union of Rural Workers from Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil, between 1990 and 2008. Its aim is to understand the dynamics of the union; its role and its relationship with local political actors
and constituents; the unified action of unions which produce the Labor Collective Agreement of the rural workers in the São Francisco Valley in the states of Bahia and Pernambuco; and
the so-called Union Pole, in which unions from Pernambuco work together in a unified political action.
