Abstract

Placed in the pursuing of some “document lacks”, the objective of this article is to analyze the discussions surrounding the women’s non-admission in the Brazilian Academy of Letters. The approach will be limited to the period of setting of the entity, when the name of a woman was quoted to fi gure among the fi rst members. The woman was the writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida who, soon after, was excluded from the fi nal list, under inconsistent reasons which, even so, were enough to keep the male-centered landscape of the Academy that remained without women during all the fi rst eighty years of existence. Generally, here we fi nd the analysis of this “institutional absence” background.
