Abstract

The article will examine certain important periods of the French presence in Brazilian poetry – Romanticism, Symbolism, Modernism and the Concrete Movement – the work of representatives of each movement: Castro Alves, Cruz e Sousa, Oswald de Andrade and Haroldo de Campos. This overview comes from the idea that the Brazilian poets do not simply imitate French sources but rather resignify them. It is thus of interest to consider the ways in which the Brazilian poets dialogue with French poetics, stressing the way in which Brazilian authors use their own poetics through what Perrone-Moisés calls a “productive confrontation”.
