Modernity: notes on the modern experience in the interior of São Paulo in the early twentieth century

In this article, through the study of documentary sources, we seek to insert Jaboticabal, a town in northeastern São Paulo state, in the dynamics of modernity and modern experience in Brazil. Process started in the big cities, in the nineteenth century, and because of the coffee economy, also experienced in the cities of São Paulo state between the end of the nineteenth and early twentiethcentury modernity that modernity is a paradoxical thing and that brings with itself the reverse, anti-modern. The new “modern practices” are viewed as tools to forge the new modern man.
