Abstract

This article intends to answer the following question: “School and teachers: for who, why and what for?” Paulo Freire in his thesis “To teach is a specific human quality” and Henry Giroux’s theory – who declares that teacher is an intelectual – are the authors that this article is based on. We pretend to discuss about how education becomes a commodity and the process of massification that eventually occurs. Besides, Rosa Maria Torres brings to discussion the World Bank proposal concerning education in the emergent countries. The author was crucial in the journey that we went through: an attempted to analyse the school and teachers’ function, role and importance.
