Abstract

The intense process of mechanization of sugar cane harvesting in the last decade composes a scene quite different from that seen in previous decades regarding the organization of work patterns and the insertion of labor employed in the biofuels industry. The new production of this dynamic industry constantly restructured with the entry of new investors groups is accompanied by significant repercussions for workers and their representative institutions. This article aims to discuss new forms of workers insertion in the production process, giving particular attention to the process of outsourcing activities of cutting, harvesting and transportation of sugarcane for sugar and alcohol companies and the prospects of union representation and action in this context. The universe of empirical analysis is based on the region of Ribeirão Preto/SP, national reference of sugar and alcohol production.
