Abstract

In this paper I aim to expose datas from an ethnography realized since 2012 in a centre of umbanda localized in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Observing the different forms of apprehension of depression I collected there, I understood that the inclusion of the mediums is done by a discord between body and soul, that they call “desajustemediúnico”(medium misadjustment). Then I begin a reflection regarding to a possible apprehension of the therapeutic dimension of umbanda in as much as the group intend to treat the depression through the “incorporação” (incorporation), which provides a behaviour transformation. This metamorphosis is gradually done, pervaded by the notions of “aceitação” and “firmeza” (acceptation and firmness) and leading the mediums to articulate the double-binds dentro/fora (inside/outside), eu/outro (I/other), from a continuing participation in the terreiro and from the incorporation experiences, through which the spiritual and the material transit and flow.
