This article proposes a reinterpretation of parenting practices in contexts of social vulnerability in light of developmental trauma theory, integrating contributions from Systems Thinking, Complexity Theory, Social Constructionism, Relational Neurobiology, and Narrative Therapy. The study conducts a hermeneutic and retrospective reinterpretation of a body of material produced in two previous studies involving families affiliated with the Associação Meninos do Morumbi in São Paulo, Brazil, between 2001 and 2010, at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). The original studies combined qualitative and quantitative approaches, including Reflective Groups, Focus Groups, family counseling sessions, genograms, and the Parenting Styles Inventory. The analysis understood violent and inconsistent parenting practices as expressions of relational distress, emotional dysregulation, and the intergenerational transmission of trauma, rather than merely as moral failings or educational deficits. The findings highlighted the role of Reflective Groups in promoting coregulation, reflexivity, and parental re-authoring. It is concluded that this approach broadens the understanding of parenting by shifting the focus from individual blame toward a relational perspective.
