Understanding the Indexers
Databases
Databases are conglomerations of data which, edited using similar attributes, have the function of helping to retrieve information aimed at generating new content. Databases generally have a search system for their records and are largely classified into: type of publication, area of knowledge and target audience.
Directories/Repositories
Directories (or repositories, in some cases) are lists whose purpose is to disseminate the scientific and socio-cultural publications of different types of organizations. They include lists that record new titles published, as well as their changes and, in the case of scientific journals, all the relevant characteristics that take into account the publication and dissemination of their issues.
Portals
Indexing portals are search tools that are very similar to directories. Their main function, being a structured environment that brings together or integrates different sources of information, is to distribute content to a series of other sites that feed into it, by means of search engines and a directory. Portals can be of the open type (guaranteeing access to all journals in the open domain) or restricted (managed by companies or institutions for the purpose of indexing the institution's own publications), depending on the institution managing them.
Indexes
Indexes have the purpose of indexing the bibliographic references of each article that makes up an issue or volume of a given journal, in order to measure the impact factor of each article cited. These references are then used to retrieve the information that will generate the citation indicators.
